Effects of chiropractic treatment on blood pressure and anxiety: a randomized, controlled trial.
This study examined the effects of chiropractic adjustments of the
thoracic spine (T1-T5) on blood pressure and state anxiety in 21
patients with elevated blood pressure. Subjects were randomly assigned
to one of three treatment conditions: active treatment, placebo
treatment, or no treatment control. The adjustments were performed by a
mechanical chiropractic adjusting device. Dependent measures obtained
pre- and post-treatment included systolic and diastolic blood pressure,
and state anxiety. Results indicated that systolic and diastolic blood
pressure decreased significantly in the active treatment condition,
whereas no significant changes occurred in the placebo and control
conditions. State anxiety significantly decreased in the active and
control conditions. Results provide support for the hypothesis that
blood pressure is reduced following chiropractic treatment. Further
study is needed to examine the long-term effects of chiropractic
treatment on blood pressure.
11 ulcer patients received chiropractic care which were compared to 24
cases treated medically. The group treated with chiropractic care
experienced clinical remission, demonstrated endoscopically, an average
of 10 days earlier than traditional care; and the use of spinal
manipulative therapy resulted in pain relief after 1-9 (avg. 3.8) days.
Nearly 40 million Americans-that’s 25% of the total population-suffer
from asthma and allergy disorders. In an asthma attack, children and
adults respond similarly, with severe congestion, swelling, and other
allergic type reactions in response to various irritants. As the
reaction progresses, breathing becomes more difficult and in some cases
life-threatening. Although the traditional methods for controlling
asthma and allergies are numerous, sickness and death from asthma
appear to be increasing. As stated in The New England Journal of
Medicine in February of 1992, this trend is at least partially due to
side effects from regular use of inhaled medications.
Among parents of asthmatic children who had received chiropractic
treatment, 92% considered this treatment beneficial. A tendency was
observed towards less satisfaction with medical treatment, information
and general guidance concerning the illness among families who sought
alternative treatment.
Significantly lower quality of life impairment rating scores were
reported for 90.1% of children after 60 days of chiropractic care.
During this same time period the average number of asthma attacks
decreased an average of 44.9%, and asthma medication usage was
decreased an average of 66.5%.
95% of patients with bronchial asthma said they benefited from
chiropractic treatment. Peak flow rate and vital capacity increased
after the third treatment.
Questions to Larry Webster, D.C.
Q: What can I do about my child's asthma?
A: Chiropractic has been highly successful in cases of asthma. I
would ask your chiropractor to look for an upper dorsal misalignment
and he may want you to make some nutritional change in your child's
diet.
Q: My 3 year-old has been diagnosed as having asthma. Can chiropractic be beneficial in cases such as this? A.G. in FL
A: Absolutely. In fact, my personal experience involves asthma.
As a child I had severe asthmatic attacks. My parents had tried
everything but chiropractic. They finally took me to chiropractor and
my asthma was greatly alleviated. Now I am a practicing chiropractor
treating children with chiropractic care, I have not had an attack
since childhood.
Since your immune system is regulated by your nervous system, an
interference within the nervous system (Subluxation) will cause an
interference with your immune system. Research has measured the effect
of chiropractic treatment on the levels of the bodies of the immune
defenses, the immunoglobulins. These immunoglobulins, IgA, IgG, and IgM
were elevated in 3 out of 4 adults after two weeks of chiropractic
adjustments. A significant increase in B-lymphocytes was also noted in
five of eight patients after receiving chiropractic adjustments twice a
week for four weeks. Your body is constantly in contact with germs in
the environment such as viruses, bacteria, parasites, etc. But oddly
enough, one must ask why our entire community does not become ill when
flu season hits. Maybe it’s due to the fact that some people’s immune
systems are stronger than others. Chiropractic can help strengthen your
immune system by allowing proper nerve impulses to flow uninterrupted
to allow your immune system to function at its optimum level and help
combat against viruses and bacteria.
If you suffer from headaches, a chiropractic spinal checkup is one of
the best things you can do. Chiropractic’s safe, gentle, and drugless
methods have helped millions of headache sufferers over the years.
However, the most common headaches are usually treated with
painkillers. The hundreds of millions of dollars spent each year on
everything form aspirin and Tylenol to prescription drugs may provide
relief, but please remember-the pain may be gone but the cause of he
headache is not corrected. That’s why we may see millions of people
swallowing pills for years, possible suffering from the side effects of
long-term medication-and not getting any better, only temporarily
felling better. Surely, that’s not a healthy way to live. But many are
turning to the natural, drugless chiropractic approach to health.
Chiropractors are the only healing professionals who are trained to
analyze and correct the vertebral subluxation complex-a spinal
distortion that can cause headaches. Researchers have often noted the
relationship between the spine and many types of headaches. Fore
example, one study of 6,000 long term (two to 25 years) headache
sufferers revealed that neck injury (whiplash, falls) was the most
important factor in the cause of the headache and should be suspected
in every nonspecific case of headache. For over one hundred years,
doctors of chiropractic have observed an intimate relationship between
the spine and headaches. If you suffer from headaches, make sure your
spine is healthy-see your chiropractor.
About 80% of the population will experience disabling low back pain at
least once in their lives. Chiropractors have helped millions of people
with low back problems, often saving them form pain, disability, drugs,
and surgery. In fact, according to the United States Government (Agency
for Health Care Policy and Research), Spinal Manipulation (Chiropractic
adjustment) is recommended for non-specific low back pain in adults.
For most cases, what was not recommended was prolonged bed rest,
corsets, massage, traction, and surgery. In fact, they found that only
1 in 100 back surgeries are helpful. Scientific Research also shows:
1. Chiropractic adjustments take less time and the benefits are longer
2. Chiropractic adjustments are safe
3. Chiropractic care costs less and results in fewer lost workdays.
The foundation for normal spinal posture is laid out early in life.
Improper development of the spine’s normal curvature will set the stage
for eventual distortions. If the base of a child’s spine is tilted
incorrectly, it can wreak havoc with the structures that build upon it.
Normally the human body attempts to maintain erect posture by balancing
back and forth over the lower spine. If the lower vertebra are wedged
to one side, it can cause the spine to compensate by bending into an
abnormal curve. This condition is commonly referred to as scoliosis.
The medical approach to scoliosis has been to administer braces and
electrical stimuli; neither of which have been proven to be very
successful. Any child suffering from poor posture and/or scoliosis
should be thoroughly analyzed by a Chiropractor for correcting the
vertebra subluxations that may be causing the problem.
Infection of the middle ear, or acute otitis media, is a common symptom
in childhood. In fact, it is the most common cause of fever in the
early years of life. This conditions may be very painful, after several
recurring infections, may result in permanent damage. What can you do
to help your child?
The most recent model suggests that reduced drainage or blockage in the
drainage system of the cervical (neck) lymphatic chains causes a
reduction in the lymphatic outflow from the Eustachian tube. This
allows fluid to build up in the inner ear, making it an inviting
environment for bacterial and viruses. Improper drainage of this fluid
is caused by a combination of events. Instead of treatment that tries
to kill the bacteria or virus, a more natural approach would be to
restore normal drainage of the ears and neck lymphatic. This is the
area in which doctors of Chiropractic can be of help to the child.
Chiropractic studies have indicated that ear infections have resolved
when vertebral subluxations are corrected.
